VSCA Regional Workshops
Are you looking for training close to home? Our Regional Workshops are held across Virginia in the late fall and early winter. These affordable workshops are hosted by the elected Regional Representative schools so are within driving distance of member schools. And the low cost of $15/person means you can afford to bring your whole council! Not sure in which region your school is located? Check the region map here. Member schools are also welcome to attend a workshop in a region other than their own if a date or location is more preferable.
Dates for the 2023-24 school year are:
- Region 1: December 2 hosted by Prince George HS
- Region 2: December 2 hosted by Grassfield HS
- Region 3: CANCELLED (was November 4) hosted by Courtland HS
- Region 4: November 11 hosted by Orange County HS at Montpelier; check-in starts at 9:00 and the day ends at 2:30.
- Regions 5-6-7-8: POSTPONED -- new date TBD hosted by Buckingham County HS

SCA Advisors' Workshop
The SCA Advisors Workshop is back!
The Virginia Student Councils Association is thrilled to bring back our exclusive workshop for all student council and class council advisors. This is your chance to leave the students behind and advance your advising skills in the company of other VSCA advisers from around the state.
When: Friday, December 8, 2023, 9:00am - 2:00pm
Where: The Founders Inn & Spa, 5641 Indian River Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23464
Cost: $125 for member school advisers; $165 for non-member schools. Cost includes morning coffee/tea with pastries and lunch
Whether you are a new advisor or an experienced veteran, you’re sure to walk away from this workshop with several new items for your advising toolbox. Topics such as understanding the purpose of student council, developing leadership skills of students, student body engagement, appreciation and recognition of faculty, staff, and students, and leadership lessons for student council and the classroom will be the focus of this lively, hands-on day of professional development.

Presenter: John McLeod from NCASC
Leading the workshop this year will be John McLeod, who serves as the Eastern District Director of the North Carolina Association of Student Councils. John’s involvement with student council has been long and distinguished. For 31 years, he was the student council advisor at Havelock High School in Havelock, NC, where he taught Biology and Leadership Development. John finds great joy in being on the NCASC Summer Leadership Workshop Staff. He was awarded the NCASC Kate Parks Kitchen Adviser of the Year Award and is a two-time NASC Region 3 Warren Shull Adviser of the Year Award winner. John served on the Nat StuCo Advisory Board from 2005-2008. His career in education continues as he enjoys interacting with students and staff in five different high schools as a substitute teacher. John lives in eastern North Carolina.
VSCA State Convention
The State Convention is the highlight of our year!
The annual Convention is the highlight of our association year, with keynote speakers, breakout sessions called Learning Labs, a pep rally, a banquet, a session with the Virginia Board of Education, general sessions, officer elections, award presentations, and more!
Hundreds of student leaders and advisors from middle and high schools across the Commonwealth will gather at Courtland High School in Fredericksburg, March 15-16, 2024 at the 97th annual VSCA Convention.

Leadership Development Day 2023
VSCA is excited to announce a new opportunity for student leaders to build stronger leadership skills
to more effectively lead their student councils. Open to all Advisory Committee members and
presidents of member schools, the Leadership Development Day offers a chance to participate in
leadership training and have some fun while networking with peers from across the Commonwealth.
▪ Friday, July 7, 2023 at Courtland High School
▪ Open to all Advisory Committee members & member school presidents
▪ Cost: $25/person
▪ Lunch and snacks will be provided
▪ Special event: tie-dye a unique VSCA t-shirt
▪ Check-in starts at 9:00am and the program begins at 9:30am. We will finish by 3:00pm
Topics to be covered:
● Why student council? What’s our purpose?
● Goal setting: both personal and for groups
● Meeting management: how to keep meetings moving and engaging
● Spirit week theme development: how to tie all the elements of HoCo together with an effective
theme and engage more students in the activities
● State service project: making an impact across the state with a powerful service project
Advisory Committee Meetings
This year's Advisory Committee will hold meetings on three Saturdays in 2023-24:
September 16 at Buckingham County HS (10:00am - 2:00pm)
November 18 at Orange County HS (10:00am - 2:00pm)
February 3 at Courtland HS (10:00am - 2:00pm)
